ANCIENT RIVER // RADAR BAND

July 18 2015

"With a healthy does of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's more lysergic moments about them, the Florida psych-rockers specialise in woozy West Coast wig outs. Standout track 'This Is The Time' goes a step further too - recalling the Brian Jonestown Massacre with it's drums and free-playing fretwork to create gentle, dreamy rock'n roll. Recent album 'Keeper Of The Dawn' is a mist that's worth getting lost in"

ANCIENT RIVER

Tame Impala’s Synths Vs. All the Guitars

July 22 2015

"While some recent psych rock seems to lack some mystery and enigma, Ancient River has plenty to spare. Their music can be contemplative and dreamily cinematic, which works perfectly with the surreal short film provided for their song “Stay With Me.” Surprisingly, the band is from Gainesville, Florida. Like Tame Impala, they share a My Bloody Valentine influence with a touch of cosmic Americana..."

ANCIENT RIVER

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

July 23 2015

"Somewhere between the Temples and Tame Impala-led strands on the more accessible-leaning side of the psych Venn diagram, new album Keeper of the Dawn, their seventh in five years, is a whirlpool of acid riffs, shamanistic organ drifts and grooves tarred and coated in deep south grit with attitudinous results."

ANCIENT RIVER

JAMES INTERVIEW

June 07 2015

"I've been a fan of Ancient River for a little while now, and can solidly testify that these two dudes make some of the finest, loudest, full throttle psych rock that you're likely to find.

The duo is currently touring up a storm to support latest long player Keeper of The Dawn, another excellent collection of their expansive, time warp noise."

ANCIENT RIVER

ALEX INTERVIEW

June 06 2015

"I moved there specifically to make music with another band in town, and then I met James,” Cordova says. “I had never joined a band that already existed. I can say this about Ancient River—when I found out about the band, if I hadn’t joined, they probably would have been my favorite band in Gainesville. I kind of feel like it was the right time, right place...”

"Imagine a psychedelic journey though a vast and dense enchanted jungle of mysterious moods and sounds, propelled along by hazy percussion and fuzzy guitars and softly guided by dreamy vocals. Your perfect breezy summer soundtrack, right?"

ANCIENT RIVER

TRACK REVIEW

THIS IS THE TIME

April 18 2015

“Another solid Ancient River track. If you’re going to make psychedelic rock, I feel like you should do it like Ancient River do.  They always sound like they’re playing in a smoke-filled room, barely audible among a hushed bunch of cult followers. There’s no bombast or stomp to the sound; it’s just delivered in a steady manner that really allows for the listener to get lost in the emotional appeal of their music. I’m expecting big things based on this new single, so we’ll see how it all unfolds when Keeper of the Dawn is unleashed on April 14th."

ANCIENT RIVER

BAND OF THE WEEK

ALBUM REVIEW

May 28 2015

"Ancient River are so dialed-in to their individual current at this moment – a current strengthened, without question, by the duo’s relentless touring – that the entire album becomes more than a sum of its parts, just as the dawn can be felt each morning as something more than our moon momentarily disappearing from view. Ancient River has turned over time to also be much more than the sum of its parts, and on 'Keeper of the Dawn,' to simply be Ancient River. The album is a keeper in a thousand different ways."

ANCIENT RIVER

JAMES INTERVIEW

April 17 2015

"....After The Ohm I locked myself in a room for a couple of years trying to really develop my sound. I played guitar until it felt like another limb and also taught myself some music theory. My goal was to define exactly what I wanted to do artistically and have the ability to do it..."

"...We are big David Axelrod fans and I loved the idea of putting the drums up front on some tracks. The album is a dark precursor to those first moments of light at dawn, only what you thought was the early light was merely a dream and you awaken to find yourself in the darkest of night with morning no where..."

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

April 16 2015

“On a nexus where the more introspective moments of early Genesis (think Lamb Lies..) intersects with a re-imagined Spiritualized chasing some lost psych-Americana spark, slow-dancing in the desert with an errant gleam of crystal, you’ll find Ancient River”

TRACK REVIEW

THIS IS THE TIME

April 15 2015

“...Ancient River serves a delightful mind fuck with This Is The Time! Like a bit heavier and dirtier personality of Tame Impala’s eerie fuzziness, this reverb obsessed duo enslaves with its captivating songwriting all the mystical and hazy psychedelics in a startling kaleidoscopic frame!"

THIS IS THE TIME

April 10 2015

“Hearing Ancient River‘s lush, expansive sound, it’s hard to imagine that it’s just two guys. Starting out as the bedroom brainchild of lead singer James Barreto, the Gainesville duo are getting ready to release their newest album Keeper of the Dawn. Taking cues from contemporaries like Temples and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, new single “This Is The Time” finds the duo in a magical haze...”

ANCIENT RIVER

TRACK REVIEW

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

May 15 2015

"With a name like “Keeper Of The Dawn”, Ancient River has set all our expectations extremely high for their new release, and needless to say, those expectations have been met. Heavy on the reverb and chill on the vibes, “Keeper of The Dawn” sounds like the product of what would happen if Connan Mockasin had a recording session with The Doors."

ANCIENT RIVER

ALBUM REVIEW

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

April 22 2015

“There were several times through listens where I had to stop and think, “Are there vocals on this album?” “Are the guitars weaving in a third eye consciousness to their mantra?” “Is this album even dirty in the context that vintage equipment give garage rockers that rawness?” The answer is yes yes, and you might consider Ancient River’s Keeper of the Dawn more dusty than dirty. You see, they blend everything together so well, you begin..."

ANCIENT RIVER

TRACK REVIEW

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

April 14 2015

“There are remnants of The Sonics and Monks, but you can also hear traces of bands like 13th Floor Elevators and Silver Apples in its amorphous psych rock wizardry. But the song isn’t merely constructed from bits of the bands who so  obviously mean a great deal to Barreto and Cordova—it’s a collaboration between these inspirations and the band’s own   sense of restless creativity.”

ANCIENT RIVER

TRACK REVIEW

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

March 23 2015

“When you read that an artist was present at the Austin Psych Fest, thoughts can be misleading, perhaps explaining the rebranding as Levitation Fest.  Ancient River remind me of how much that sound can influence, yet also expand beyond those boundaries, especially with their new six minute opus.  The songs hazy and plodding, quietly building on this barely audible little melody. It’s really something to experience, finding yourself weaving our ears in and out of this tune...”

KEEPER OF THE DAWN

April 02 2015

“...my first exposure to the band, who are already veterans of Austin Psych Fest, Liverpool Psych Fest and others — they’ll also appear at Milwaukee Psych Fest and the Reverence Festival this year — but the spaciousness the Gainesville duo offer argues well in its own favor.”
